- Tell us about Style by Treva? How did you get started?
My love of fashion started when I was a teen and started modeling classes at the Bernice Johnson School of Modeling in the 80s and Haute Models in the 90s in Sioux Falls. I started to follow fashion in all of the magazines and eventually began styling family members and friends in high school and college just for fun. I continued this for many years because I had a passion to help other women look and feel their best. After much encouragement from friends and family, I decided to start a business in personal styling as it has become so popular in larger cities. I thought to myself that although this concept may be new to this area, I wanted to give it a shot! With all of my experience in the beauty and fashion industry over the years, combined with my training with an East Coast based celebrity stylist, I decided to launch my business, Style by Treva about 2 years ago. I have had a fabulous time doing what I love every day. The response has been just wonderful!
- What is one piece of advice you like to give couples/brides/etc?
I tell them to book all of their vendors as soon as possible. More brides today are hiring event planners and bridal stylists to help them stay on trend when it comes to planning their wedding. Most couples want their wedding to be an expression of their personalities and interests. Planners and stylists can help brides be more organized and can take away some of the stress that a couple and their families face when it comes to making big decisions on what to wear and how all of the events are going to look. Everything should flow together and that includes your image as well as your events. I am there for my brides 100%!
- How would you describe your company’s style?
I think that many women living here in the Midwest would say that their style may be a little more laid back and that’s how I see my business. It’s our culture here. Style by Treva is a professional, yet friendly and approachable company that provides quality one- on- one services to their clients and brides! I have worked with the soccer mom wanting to update her style, to politicians who needed to work on diction skills and professional attire so that they can attract voters. Every day is a different day. And since I love the bridal industry, I decided to add this as a service I offer as well. I work with some of the best bridal vendors in the business at Uptown Events.
- Why should engaged brides be looking into your services?
If you are a bride who needs help making decisions on what gown, veil or jewelry would look best on you, or what style of tux your groom should wear, or even what style or color bridesmaids gowns should be, then I can help you. Your bridal look should enhance your personality, your style and your body shape. I am not affiliated with any bridal salon. - Where do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from my mother who was a bridal stylist for many years in Sioux Falls. She has retired from the business now, but my mother has always been a stylish woman and we shop together all of the time! From a very early age, she taught me the importance of taking good care of your skin and dressing for success!
- What is your favorite thing about styling brides?
I enjoy the time we spend together making bridal fashion choices and learning about her and what her style and personality is. Each bride is different and that is what makes each experience so special. For her to choose me to be her stylist is personal and I take it very seriously. On a lighter note, it’s fun to dress a bride as it is such an exciting time in her life. I feel honored to be there for her. When it’s all over, we feel like we have known each other our entire lives and lifelong friendships are made. It’s a truly magical experience to finally see it all come together on her wedding day!
- How far in advance should your clients be looking into booking your services?
I tell brides to book early as my wedding dates in the summer book up quickly. I have had brides book as early as a year in advance. I also do bridal makeup and I tend to get very busy from May to September. April is Prom season so that month is busy as well!
- Outside of weddings what is your favorite thing to style?
I love to show women how to style from their own closet with things they already have. A closet-clean up is a must for most women just so they can figure out what to keep and what to get rid of. A few tweaks here and there can make all of the difference, and you will feel so much better having an organized closet! Hiring a personal stylist does not mean going to the mall and buying an entire new wardrobe. A good stylist will be honest with you and will offer you tips and advice to help you make better wardrobe choices in the future. By having a personal stylist, you are investing in yourself. Your image is what people see first about you and making a good first impression counts! Your image is your business card. Dress accordingly for each situation, whether you are going out on a job interview or on your first “date” with that special someone!
- Do you travel?
Yes, I LOVE to travel. I recently was in London and in Dublin, Ireland with my husband and daughter. It was the most exciting experience of my life! Fashion in the UK is much different than it is here. Americans have embraced the “athleisure” wardrobe and you will never see that in the UK. The Brits love to dress up and are very stylish, following all of the trends. I was there during London Fashion Week and also had the opportunity to shop in the world famous Harrod’s Department Store. It is one of the largest department stores I have ever been in and has some of the best food and fashion couture the world has to offer! Princess Diana’s influence and presence is still very much alive in London.
- What do you do in your spare time?
My time is spent primarily running my daughter to all of her activities and being a proud mama at all of her dance and piano recitals, play performances, and basketball games! My husband and I also spend a great deal of our summer at our lake home at Okoboji, Iowa. I also love to read books and enjoy a good presidential biography. I know a historical fact about every president and first lady!
